What is the Difference Between a Narcissist and a Sociopath?

1. Please do not attempt to diagnose anyone with these conditions yourself! NPD is very difficult to diagnose correctly. Also consider the advice below before attempting to ascertain what disorder your partner might have.

  1. 2.The terms psychopath and sociopath are not used in psychiatry. The term used is 'antisocial' (antisocial personality disorder).

Since the treatment options for either of these conditions are so limited it is probably not of much use putting too much time or effort effort into trying to get a correct diagnoses. Both disorders are unlikely to present looking for help themselves, unless of course their life has completely fallen apart otherwise. In this case they should seek help and a diagnosis can then be sought from a professional.

The partners, family members and victims of people displaying the symptoms of narcissism and anti social personality disorder should put their efforts instead into learning how to protect themselves, stand up for themselves and we would recommend also learning how to hold their ground with these people (rather than running away).

This will usually take an external support network and guidance, but we would recommend this as the most urgent area to put your attention to rather than self diagnosis.
